Thank You and Happy Retirement, Shirley!

Holsworthy Town Council would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Shirley Crane, who is officially retiring this month from her role as the town’s Lollipop Lady after 25 years of dedicated service.

For generations of schoolchildren, Shirley has been a friendly and familiar face, helping them safely cross the road come rain or shine. Her warm smile, reliability, and commitment to the safety of Holsworthy’s young people have made her a much-loved figure in our community.

We are truly grateful for the time, care and energy Shirley has given to this important role, and we know many parents, carers and pupils – past and present – will join us in wishing her a very happy and well-deserved retirement.

Thank you, Shirley, for everything you’ve done for Holsworthy.

If you would be interested in taking over the role of Holsworthy’s Lollipop Person please contact Devon County Council or Shirley Crane for more information.

Update Holsworthy Pavilion

Holsworthy Town Council are the landlords of the Holsworthy Area Sports Pavilion in Stanhope Park.

Currently there is a lease in place with HASP. During our annual checks, we were made aware by our insurers that the Pavilion was not insured for ‘commercial’ trading.

The Town Council called an emergency meeting with members of HASP to discuss the issues brought up by the insurance company. The legal documentation for insurance and lease requirements was not in place as well as necessary structural changes required for commercial trading with an estimated cost of around £5000-£6000. As the building was uninsured it was agreed with HASP that the commercial trading was required to cease with immediate effect.

The ongoing use of the Pavilion being used by a commercial third party was discussed. Due to the fact the third party had handed in their notice to quit, HASP informed the council that they would return to using the Pavilion with their old model whereby volunteers operate the management of refreshments.

This will allow HASP to continue to facilitate their community hub.
